Brazil bans cosmetics testing on animals

The Brazilian Government of President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva has banned the use of animals in cosmetics and perfume research. The measure also applies to products with proven safety and efficacy, Agencia Brasil reported Wednesday.

 Vertebrate animals, such as dogs, cats and rats, can no longer be used in research for the development and quality control of personal care products, cosmetics, and perfumes, as per a resolution published in the Diário Oficial da União (Official Gazette) Wednesday by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation's National Council for the Control of Animal Experimentation (Concea).

 The measure applies to the tests of products already featuring components with proven safety and efficacy. For products with new formulas without proven safety or efficacy, the standard requires the use of alternative research methods. According to the Concea Coordinator Katia de Angelis, there are 40 methods recognized by the council.

Okay, USA followers, you know how we all hate bank fees? I mean, you overdraw your account by $1.23 and you get charged $25.00? That's evil.

As of Jan 26, 2022, the Biden Administration CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) is bringing the hammer down on junk fees. This is more than just bank fees - this is going after the junk fees on things like prepaid cards, loans, bank transfers, credit card late fees, even closing costs on a mortgage.

The CFPB needs public comments, like the opinions of real people who are affected by these fees, to build a case about telling financial organizations that THEY CAN'T CHARGE THEM ANYMORE.

The CFPB says it’s particularly interested in hearing from older and lower-income consumers, students, service members and people of color.

There's some good detail about the comments in this investopedia article. The easiest way to comment is to send an email to FederalRegisterComments@cfpb.gov. Include Docket No. CFPB-2022-0003 in the subject line of the message.

Note that these are public comments. They will be published online through the CFPB website. Don't include account numbers, social security numbers, or full names. Tell a story - tell about the time you overdrew your account by $1.23 and the bank took $35. Tell about how you signed up for a credit card and the company charged you a bunch of fees you didn't even know about. Tell about how you transferred money from your savings account to a checking account and the bank charged you $2.50.

Hi everyone, I hate to post something like this because I’ve always tried my best not to ask others for money and rely on myself, but I’m completely stuck in a vicious cycle right now. I dropped out of school at 15 and was in and out of hospital programs during my teens instead, so the only jobs I’m able to work are minimum wage, which barely covers for my rent, food and bills. It’s hard to get employment too, because I transitioned to try and improve my mental health, but I’m not someone who passes at all, and it’s effected my ability to get hired by a huge amount. The pandemic has made everything even harder, and all I want to be able to do is be able to get my GED and improve my life.

Because GED classes cost a lot of money where I live, and the test costs money too, I haven’t been able to save for it, or even pay for one class. I’m asking for 2K to cover a year of classes because I missed all of highschool, and to pay for the test. Despite that, any amount helps- if I’m able to even pay for one class, then I can have hope for my future. If all of my followers donated just 2$, it would cover the gofundme.

WTF is he waiting for?? For Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell to control the House and the Senate before he retires? Bounce, bitch.

So look, we have at least two things we need to be on the lookout for. First, if the Democrats lose control of the House and the Senate in the midterms, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy will stall and try to prevent Biden from placing another SCOTUS justice. What we need to be looking out for is how Biden and Democrats respond. We are wayyy past the “civility” and “seeking bipartisanship” part of the conversation. Second, we need to pay especially close attention to who Biden nominates. I’m Black and I’m good with not getting a token Black woman if she’s just another business friendly “moderate” (read: conservative in neoliberal clothing).

Remember, Democrats have had multiple opportunities to codify Roe v Wade into law, and they squandered every opportunity. The next person appointed to the court not only needs to be in favor of Roe, they need to have a history of supporting it. And for anyone thinking any variant of, “but Republicans won’t go for that,” my response is that you need a serious mental realignment. Remember how much Republicans cared about “bipartisanship” when they crammed Trump’s nominees on us? Right, they didn’t give af, not at all. They ruthlessly seated whoever they wanted. Biden needs to do the same. Fuck what Republicans and conservative voters want.

Prepare yourselves for a lot of thought pieces that are actually weaponized identity politics to promote yet another pink-washed, cookie cutter conservative, and definitely prepare for a boatload of really shitty hot takes - like nominating Hillary Clinton.🙄😒 We need a progressive on the court. A real progressive, not another “left” “leaning,” tough-on-crime, status quo, “center-left,” yet very business friendly doorstop, like Merrick Garland.

Thanks to @pappebrisco for gently reminding me that if Breyer retires mid session, it would leave a 6-2 conservative majority for the rest of this current session. I just wish he would have retired sooner, between SCOTUS sessions. I stand by everything else I said though.
